FAQ Details

Does a student have the right to review ALL records maintained by the university?

FERPA grants access to education records, which are specifically defined in 34 CFR ¤ 99.3. The law defines records as any records that are directly related to a student; and maintained by an educational agency or institution or by a party acting for the agency or institution. Education records can take virtually any form including handwritten information and email.

Only records kept in the sole possession of the faculty or staff member as a personal memory aid, University Police records created for a law enforcement purposes, employment records, medical records created by a medical professional and records created or received by the university after an individual is no longer a student are exempted.

Even records that are typically exempted can be considered education records under the law depending on how they are used and/or stored. You are encouraged to consult with the Student Registration and Records Office or counsel to determine the status of records.
