Physics Department
Welcome to the Physics Department!
Part of physics is concerned with building real stuff in the real world. Another part of physics explores the mysteries of the universe and attempts to discover the hidden patterns in everything. We aim to do both at Cortland where our main objective is to help our students develop confidence working with their hands and deep insights into the fundamental laws of nature, culminating in a refined physical intuition that can be applied to a wide range of disciplines.
As a physics major, you will gain a strong background in applied mathematics, learn advanced computer skills, study advanced theoretical frameworks like general relativity and quantum mechanics, and work with sophisticated science instrumentation. You will also have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty on a wide range of advanced research projects.
By studying physics at SUNY Cortland, you are preparing yourself for a successful career in scientific fields, teaching, government, business, and industry in a wide range of fields. Please see our Prospective Students page for further details.
