Area teachers, teaching assistants, school administrators and College faculty will entertain their colleagues and celebrate teaching with a variety show featuring music, humor and reflections on Wednesday, May 6, at SUNY Cortland. The 20th annual "Celebration of Teaching: A Cabaret Evening of Entertainment" will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a dessert buffet and social gathering in Corey Union Function Room.

Popular recording artist Matt Nathanson will perform during the SUNY Cortland Student Activities Board's fifth annual "Rock for a Cause" on Tuesday, April 28. The performance, which begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Corey Union Function Room, benefits the V-Day UNICEF joint campaign, called "Stop Raping Our Greatest Resource: Power to Women and Girls of the Democratic Republic of the Congo." V-Day is a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. The 37 Project, a SUNY Cortland student band, and David Smallen will open for Nathanson.

Timothy Davis, an assistant professor of physical education at SUNY Cortland, has been named the College's eighth recipient of the Dr. Rozanne Brooks Dedicated Teacher Award. He will be formally recognized on Thursday, May 7, during the College's annual Professional and Faculty Awards Ceremony. The Brooks Award honors a faculty member who devotes a significant amount of time both to teaching and to working with students outside of class.

More than 850 Central New York college students and 100 school district recruiters from New York and other states are expected to attend the 24th annual Central New York Teacher Recruitment Days on April 23-24 at SUNY Cortland. Hosted by SUNY Cortland for the last 24 years, the event is organized through the College's Career Services and co-sponsored by the Central New York Teacher Recruitment Days Consortium, which represents the career services offices of 16 area public and private colleges and universities

Four SUNY Cortland seniors were honored on April 7 in Albany, N.Y., with 2009 State University of New York Chancellor's Awards for Student Excellence. SUNY Vice Chancellor and Officer-In Charge John J. O'Connor recognized 238 students from the 64 campuses throughout the state during the ceremony at the Empire State Convention Center. The recipients were honored for integrating academic excellence with accomplishments in leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts or career achievement. This year's honorees have an overall grade point average of 3.77.

A light has gone off for SUNY Cortland employees who recognized endorsing lighting energy efficiency as one of the easiest ways to reduce energy use. Steven Lundberg, who joined the College 33 years ago, has witnessed many of the changes the College has made to endorse sustainability throughout its operations. "Changing the lighting on campus isn't a new thing," said Lundberg, the assistant director of maintenance and operations services.

SUNY Cortland Associate Professor Syed Pasha will be holding his annual campus-community cleanup on Monday, April 20, at the College. A clean community has been a main concern of Pasha's since his undergraduate studies at Madras University in India.

Physicians Harris Silver and William Baerthlein will offer advice to individuals with a pre-medical college education who are considering careers in medicine on Thursday, April 16, at SUNY Cortland. The doctors will speak and answer questions in an open forum from 3-5 p.m. in Corey Union, Room 209. Presented as part of the SUNY Cortland President's Executive-in-Residence Program, the event is free and open to SUNY Cortland students majoring in pre-medical disciplines as well as the public.

Polish-born cinematographer Slawomir Grunberg will give an illustrated lecture on the power of documentary film in shaping a more humane world, on Tuesday, April 21, at SUNY Cortland. Grunberg, who was named a 1997 John Simon Guggenheim Fellow in Documentary Film Making, will speak of his personal experience and philosophy and use examples from his decades of film making as illustration during the presentation, which will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Brockway Hall Jacobus Lounge.

The 13th annual Scholars' Day, a series of presentations highlighting faculty, staff and student scholarship and research at SUNY Cortland, will take place in Old Main on Friday, April 17. This year, the all-day event encompasses 120 different presentations and poster sessions offered by hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students and more than 80 faculty and staff members. The subject matter covers a wide array of academic disciplines at SUNY Cortland.
