SUNY Cortland’s tobacco-free efforts have all but eliminated a major health threat on campus.
Now, members of the College’s Tobacco Advisory Committee are looking to carry that positive momentum into the nearby community with a tobacco litter cleanup Tuesday, April 2. It’s an active way to promote SUNY Cortland’s tobacco-free efforts while extending a friendly hand to campus neighbors.
All members of the campus community are invited to participate, including students in need of volunteer hours and faculty and staff members looking for an easy way to score points for extra steps in the SUNY Wellness Challenge. Special rewards will be handed out to the top trash collectors.
Volunteers should meet at 4:15 p.m. on the front steps of Corey Union. From there, they will be given cleanup supplies to make a sweep of the tobacco litter near campus. All discarded tobacco products will be dumped into a 20-gallon fish tank, giving us a visual measure of how carelessly discarded cigarette butts can affect the environment.
The College’s Tobacco Advisory Committee would like to thank all smokers for respecting the campus tobacco ban and urge those who smoke on the perimeter of the campus to be considerate of SUNY Cortland’s neighbors by disposing of used tobacco products properly and by avoiding routinely congregating in the same location.
In the event of inclement weather, Tuesday’s cleanup will be rescheduled for Thursday, April 4, at 4:15 p.m.
