SUNY Cortland Alumni Reunion Weekend Planned for July 16-19

Nearly 600 SUNY Cortland alumni and friends are expected to enjoy class get-togethers, parties and other activities on campus during the College's 2009 Alumni Reunion Weekend from July 16-19.

“We are excited to once again host Theta Phi as our featured sorority,” said Erin Boylan, associate director of alumni affairs. “We also, for the first time, look forward to hosting media clubs, including CSTV, WSUC-FM/WCSU-AM, NeoVox/Uniplanet and The Dragon Chronicle/The Press/The Hilltop Press.”

Reunion Weekend opens Thursday, July 16, with a welcome party for the Class of 1949 at the Red Dragon Restaurant.

On Friday morning, a golf tournament will be held at Walden Oaks Country Club Golf Course or participants can enjoy a boat cruise on Cayuga Lake.

Also on Friday afternoon, the SUNY Cortland Alumni Association, the Cortland College Foundation and President Erik J. Bitterbaum will host a special reception for the Reunion Class Planning Committee and Reunion Gift Committee members in Brockway Hall Jacobus Lounge. The Class of 1959 dinner will be held at the Lynne Parks ’68 SUNY Cortland Alumni House. Friday’s activities culminate with a reunion party in the Corey Union Function Room.

Saturday’s events include campus tours and photographs. Participants include the Half Century Club, comprised of everyone who graduated more than 50 years ago; the Classes of 1949, 1954, 1959, 1964, 1969, 1974, 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994 and 1999; members of Theta Phi sorority and former participants of student
media clubs. Members of Nu Sigma Chi sorority will sponsor an alumnae tea from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at their house on 52 Prospect Terrace. Theta Phi plans a dinner at the Alumni House.

Memorial Library will be open and the College archives will be available for perusal from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. on Saturday. Alumni volunteers will give guided campus tours at 10:30 a.m.

The SUNY Cortland Alumni Association will present its highest honor, the Distinguished Alumna/Alumnus Award, to three graduates during the Alumni Reunion Weekend luncheon. The luncheon begins Saturday at noon in the Corey Union Function Room and honors reunion classes and this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award recipients. Rosa LaSorte Rich ’55 is being honored for her outstanding service in public secondary and higher education and the late retired Cmdr. John W. Clark ’59 was a highly decorated U.S. Navy officer whose 31-year career included combat service during the Vietnam War. The association will bestow its Distinguished Young Alumni Award on Jené Lupoli Luciani ’99, a successful broadcast journalist who chronicles the fashion industry.

Immediately following the luncheon, members of Alpha Kappa Phi/Agonian, Sigma Sigma Sigma and Sigma Rho Sigma sorority will meet in the Corey Union Fireplace Lounge. Tours of the Alumni House will be given in the afternoon.

On Sunday, a farewell breakfast is scheduled for 9-11 a.m. in the Corey Union Caleion Room.
