Rozanne Brooks Lecture Series Continues on April 1 with David Patel

The 2008-09 Rozanne M. Brooks Lecture Series at SUNY Cortland will continue during the spring semester with talks by guest speakers on the theme of "The Culture of Violence."

The lectures will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the Sociology and Anthropology Department's new location, Moffett Center, Room 2125. The events are all free and open to the public. A reception to welcome each speaker starts at 4 p.m. in the Rozanne M. Brooks Museum's new location, Moffett Center, Room 2126.

David Patel, an assistant professor in the Department of Government at Cornell University, will speak on Wednesday, April 1, at 4:30 p.m. in Moffett Center, Room 2125. A reception in the Brooks Museum, Moffett Center, Room 2126, begins at 4 p.m. Patel's talk is titled "Being Iraqi after Saddam: The rise of sectarianism and civil war in Iraq."

Brett Troyan, an assistant professor of history at SUNY Cortland, will present "Colombia: A Land of Paradoxes" on Wednesday, April 22.

Troyan, who joined the College in 2002 shortly after completing her doctoral studies in Latin American history at Cornell University, has focused her research on 20th century Colombia. She has written various published articles in peer-reviewed journals about Colombian state formation and the indigenous movement. Troyan has received several grants for her work such as the Woodrow Wilson Junior Democracy Scholar Fellowship.
