Celebrating Local NYSCA/NYFA Fellowship Recipients
March 5 - April 13

NYSCA/NYFA Fellowship recipients  Peter Beasecker, Sharif Bey, Ariana Gerstein, Dusty Herbig, and Monteith McCollum will show their work in the Hallway and Under the Balcony Galleries at the Dowd Fine Arts Center. These artists represent a small cross-section of an active visual arts scene in Central New York. The artwork selected for the satellite exhibition compliments the diverse display of media and artists and demonstrates that our region is home to many talented artists excelling in their field.

Tom Hall: Silent Discos
January 22 -February 16, 2018

Silent Discos is a series of works that reflects onto the world the metaphor of the empty dance floor. The artist Tom Hall has presented objects that he connects to culturally, but with ideals that disappoint him under scrutiny. They are a collection of iconic objects, tiled with mirrors to become peculiar disco balls that, in the artist’s eyes, hold a floored symbolic position in recent history. They are about the presentation of power and status and its failure. They represent an escapist ideal, which can never deliver.

Loop: connecting to the beginning
January 22 – February 16, 2018

Loop: connecting to the beginning focuses on animation and the looping sequence through a variety of art forms. Featured artists include Eric Dyer, Juan Fontanive, Laura Heit, Ondrej Janek, and Anna Vasof.  Their works explore a wide range of media and technical approaches that demonstrate high- and low-tech versions of the moving image. These contemporary works are juxtaposed with photographs by Harold E. Edgerton and Eadweard J. Muybridge to provide historical context for this study of motion.

Blazo Kovacevic: Incited
October 23-December 13, 2017

Incited is a large-scale, multimedia installation featuring digitally modified security X-rays taken by European border patrol forces of vehicles carrying hidden illegal immigrants in their cargo. This exhibition focuses on the acute problems of human trafficking, smuggling, and terrorism currently dominating the socio-political sphere. The unobstructed views of trucks, vans, and cars harboring stowaways also offer insight into privacy issues and the fragility of the human body.
