Christopher Gascón
Christopher Gascón, Modern Languages Department, wrote and recorded a song inspired by Cortland’s common read, Braiding Sweetgrass, by Robin Wall Kimmerer. The single, “Hold On,” was released in February 2024 and can be heard on Spotify and other music streaming services under artist name Juniper Salute.
Robert Spitzer
Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, is the author of a new book, just published by Oxford University Press, titled, Guns Across America: Reconciling Gun Rules and Rights. The book argues that, contrary to the current national debate, gun laws and rights were perfectly compatible throughout most of American history, and that guns were actually regulated more strictly in the past than in the current era. In addition to gun law history, the book also examines the so-called right of rebellion, the Second Amendment and the assault weapons ban controversy, modern “stand-your-ground” laws, and New York state’s tough new gun laws and their impact on gun habits.
Bryanne Bellovary, Erik Lind and James Hokanson
Bryanne Bellovary, Erik Lind and James Hokanson, Kinesiology Department, co-authored two research posters with senior exercise science majors Lauren Roberts and Jacqueline Santaniello. Roberts presented the posters at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference within the American College of Sport Medicine, held Nov. 5 and 6 in Harrisburg, Pa. The poster titles are: “Heart Rate Responses to Three Unweighted Conditions on an Alter-G® Treadmill” and “Arterial Blood Pressure Responses Reflect Differences in Alter-G® Treadmill Chamber Pressure in College Age Participants.”
James Hokanson
James Hokanson, Kinesiology Department, was invited to collaborate with ongoing ageing research at the University of Salamanca, Spain. The study, sponsored by the Salamanca University Hospital and Department of Physical Therapy and Nursing, focuses on the health and fitness levels of older adults. The study, which has been continuously funded for nearly 20 years, evaluates health and fitness of approximately 600 adults in the province of Salamanca in the Castille and León region of Spain and includes organized rehabilitation and exercise programs.
Dan Harms
Dan Harms, Library, had his chapter, “Hell and Fairy: The Differentiation of Fairies and Demons within British Ritual Magic of the Early Modern Period,” published in the edited collection Knowing Demons, Knowing Spirits in the Early Modern Period from Palgrave Macmillan.
Mike Fusilli
Mike Fusilli, Development Office, a major gift officer and a volunteer coach for SUNY Cortland’s wrestling team, was inducted into the upstate New York chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Fusilli helped lead Ithaca College to two national titles during his collegiate wrestling career and was an NCAA Div. III individual national champion in 1990. He previously served as head coach at Binghamton University and has prior assistant coaching experience at Ithaca College and North Carolina University.
Mark Dodds
Mark Dodds, Sport Management Department, edited the Encyclopedia of Sports Management and Marketing, which was chosen by the American Library Association RUSA BRASS Committee for Business Reference Sources as an Outstanding Business Reference source. This encyclopedia contained submissions from Sport Management Department chair Jordan Kobritz, faculty members Peter Han, Genevieve Birren and Ted Fay, and several graduate students.
Eric Edlund
Eric Edlund, Physics Department, gave a talk at Colgate University on Nov. 15 titled “A simplified analysis of orbital interception and rendezvous” which was based on his 2021 paper in the American Journal of Physics.
Lindsey Darvin
Lindsey Darvin, Sport Management Department, now serves on the Women in Esports Steering Committee with the Pittsburgh Knights, an esports organization sponsored by PNC, the Pittsburgh Stealers and the Pittsburgh Penguins. The first roundtable has been released, with others to follow. Also, Darvin’s paper was accepted by Sustainability Science and published online Oct. 20. It is titled “Mass-participant sport events and sustainable development: gender, social bonding, and connectedness to nature as predictors of socially and environmentally responsible behavior intentions.”

Katherine M. Polasek, Kinesiology Department, co-authored an article titled “Women in Sport and Exercise Psychology: A North American Perspective” that was recently published in the International Journal of Sport Psychology.
