Claus Schubert
Claus Schubert, Mathematics Department, gave two talks at the Joint Mathematics Meetings 2010 held Jan. 13-16 in San Francisco, Calif. The first talk, “Displaying Mathematics with Plain HTML,” was part of a session on publishing mathematics on the Web. The second talk, “Teaching Abstract Algebra using Technology,” was part of a session on the scholarship of teaching and learning in undergraduate mathematics.
Denise D. Knight
Denise D. Knight, English Department, and Jennifer S. Tuttle of the University of New England have been nominated for the Modern Language Association’s Morton N. Cohen Award for a Distinguished Edition of Letters for The Selected Letters of Charlotte Perkins Gilman (University of Alabama Press, 2009). The recipient will be selected in the fall.
Robert Spitzer
Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, is the author of a book chapter titled “Gun Control: Constitutional Mandate or Myth?” for a book titled Moral Controversies in American Politics, to be published later this year by M.E. Sharpe.
Regina Grantham
Regina Grantham, Communication Disorders and Sciences Department, was appointed one of the four ambassadors for the New York State Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NYSSLHA). She will represent the Central New York region. The ambassador positions are highly prestigious and recognize leadership and professional knowledge. The ambassadors will be visible representatives facilitating communication between the NYSSLHA association and area members.
Tiantian Zheng
Tiantian Zheng, Sociology/Anthropology Department, was recently informed that her book, Red Lights, is the winner of the 2010 Sara A. Whaley book prize from the National Women’s Studies Association for the book published in the previous calendar year judged to have made the most significant contribution to the topic of women and labor.
Robert Spitzer
Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, is the author of an article titled, “President Obama: Veto Yes, Pocket Veto No,” that was posted on the Huffington Post on Oct. 8. The article takes issue with the manner in which President Obama vetoed a bill on Oct. 7. Spitzer is a regular blogger for Huffington.
Peter McGinnis
Peter McGinnis, Kinesiology Department, presented a paper titled “Novel Teaching Techniques in Biomechanics” at the National Association for Sport and Physical Education Preconference Symposium on Teaching Biomechanics on July 19 in Marquette, Mich. The symposium was in conjunction with the International Society of Biomechanics in Sport Conference that began on July 19.
Robert Spitzer
Robert Spitzer, Political Science Department, has been appointed to serve as a member of the Cortland City Planning Commission. His appointment was approved by the City Council in November.
Beth Shiner Klein
Beth Shiner Klein, Childhood/Early Childhood Education Department, was a co-presenter at the “Planning for Teacher Preparation in N.Y.S. — Integrating Strategies into the Environmental Literacy Plan” pre-conference symposia at the North American Association for Environmental Education annual conference on Sept. 29 in Buffalo, N.Y. Also at the conference, she presented a session titled, “Integrating Sustainability Education into Preservice Elementary and Secondary Teacher Preparation."
In addition, Klein co-edited a book, The Inclusion of Environmental Education in Science Teacher Preparation, published by Springer and sponsored by the Association for Science Teacher Education. Co-editors are Alec Bodzin of Lehigh University and Starlin Weaver of Salisbury University.
Mary Emm
Mary Emm, Communication Disorders and Sciences Department, along with a colleague, presented a poster session at the 2010 American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Convention held Nov. 18-20 in Philadelphia, Pa. The poster was titled “Leadership in Teaching: Utilizing Student Perspectives on Administration and Supervision.”
