Denise D. Knight, English Department, will present a keynote address, “Reconstructing Gilman in the 21st Century: Art, Parenthood, and la Vita in Bella Rome,” at an international conference on “Women and Society: Charlotte Perkins Gilman Today,” in October at the Universita di Roma, Italia.
Jerome O’Callaghan
Jerome O’Callaghan, School of Arts and Sciences, presented a paper at the annual meeting of the North East Academy of Legal Studies in Business (NEALSB) on May 1 in Ithaca, N.Y. The paper, co-authored with Paula O’Callaghan and Rosemary Hartigan, addresses gossip in the workplace with a focus on management and free speech issues. The authors learned recently that they were joint winners of the Best Paper Award at the conference.
Jenn McNamara
Jenn McNamara, Art and Art History Department, has had her woven work from 2009, “Untitled,” accepted into the North American Sculpture Biennial at the Foothills Art Center in Golden, Colo. The international competition, established in 1979, was juried by sculptors Lawrence Argent and John McEnroe as well as curator Michael Chavez. The exhibition will be open from July 16-Aug. 29 with a presentation by the jurors on July 21.

Ellen R. Paterson, library, recently had two book reviews published: “Does An Apple A Day Keep the Doctor Away?” by Lerner, 2010, in the July issue of Science Books & Films and, “Integrative Women’s Health, Oxford, 2010, appeared in the September issue of Choice.
Herb Haines
Herb Haines, Sociology/Anthropology Department, presented the plenary address at the 2010 New York State Sociological Association conference on Oct. 2 at Tompkins-Cortland Community College. His address was titled “Bridges to Somewhere: The Power of Unexpected Alliances in Social Movements.”
Gretchen Herrmann
Gretchen Herrmann, Library, was informed that her article “Machiavelli Meets Christmas: The White Elephant Gift Exchange and the Holiday Spirit," has been accepted for publication in The Journal of Popular Culture. The article treats the reversal of values normally associated with gift giving during the holidays, such that, instead of being about generosity and sharing, the White Elephant or Evil Santa exchange highlights materiality and personal gain.

Janet Duncan, Foundations and Social Advocacy and Institute for Disability Studies, taught a graduate seminar in Collaborative Consultation for 20 teachers at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, during July.

Ute Ritz-Deutch, History Department, presented a conference paper titled “German Colonists in Southern Brazil: Navigating Multiple Identities on the Brazilian Frontier,” at the Tales of Transit International Conference on June 9 in Antwerp, Belgium. The theme of the conference was transatlantic migration.

Joel Shatzky, professor emeritus of English, had his article, "Educating for Democracy," published in the Winter 2009-2010 issue of Jewish Currents. He was writing a blog for The Examiner since October and now is writing a blog, also called “Educating for Democracy,” on The Huffington Post.
