Student Life Center General Facility Rules (Updated 1/2/2025)

The goal of the SUNY Cortland Campus Recreation Department is to provide a variety of recreational opportunities that contribute to the physical, emotional and social health of all members of our University community. We will continuously develop programs and activities for our participants to increase their positive use of leisure time, improve their quality of life and encourage them to commit to a lifetime of fitness and recreation participation.

                Assumption of Risk

                • Inherent risks are associated with every recreational activity. Authorized Users assume these risks when they agree to participate. All Authorized Users are strongly advised to secure health insurance and visit their physician for a physical examination prior to registration or participation.
                • All those who enter must sign a Student Life Center Acknowledgement of Risk, Waiver and Release of Liability Form before using the facility.

                Facility Entry & ID Policy

                • All Authorized Users must have a current Student Life Center membership in order to enter the facility. Membership may be confirmed/purchased in the Campus Recreation Office, Monday-Friday, Student Life Center, Room 1201, 8:30a.m. – 4:00p.m.
                • All Authorized Users must present a valid SUNY Cortland ID Card or Student Life Center Membership Card each time they enter.
                • Access to the Student Life Center is limited to Authorized Users, who are required to provide a student or staff ID or other accepted form of identification.
                • All participants are responsible for their ID card and its use. Falsifying identification is in violation with SUNY Cortland Handbook Policy 435.06. Violators of this policy will be referred to the appropriate office (e.g.: Student Conduct Office) and may lose their privilege of using the Student Life Center.

                Guest Pass Policy

                • All affiliate members may sponsor guests by purchasing a Guest Pass for each guest at the rate of $5/day.
                • Non-affiliate members may not sponsor guests or purchase guest passes.
                • Guests will be considered Authorized Users and are subject to the same policies as members of the Student Life Center.

                Facility & Program Use Policies

                • Authorized Users must follow all posted guidance on use of the facilities (e.g., running directions on the indoor track, use of swimming lanes, acceptable footwear, availability of equipment or areas). Parents and guardians are responsible for ensuring that Authorized Minors follow such guidance.
                • All fitness equipment should be used consistent with posted Campus Recreation or manufacturer’s guidance on proper use, including with regard to age, fitness, and proper usage technique. Parents and guardians are responsible for ensuring that Authorized Minors follow such guidance.
                • Authorized Users must respect the authority of any Campus Recreation Staff and respond to their directions accordingly.
                • Authorized Users wishing to attend Group Exercise classes must purchase memberships or a drop-in day pass prior to attending classes.
                • Authorized Users must always wear athletic apparel. This also includes athletic footwear (no open footwear or socked/bare feet).
                • Personal training or other instruction for pay or trade by outside entities is strictly prohibited and could jeopardize membership privileges for all parties involved. Personal training and instruction is limited to Campus Recreation staff.
                • No food or drink is allowed in spaces of activity, except for water in plastic or metal re-sealable containers.
                • Authorized Users will refrain from use of drugs and/or alcohol prior to and during use of the facility
                • The use of lacrosse balls, baseballs, and softballs is not allowed in the Student Life Center
                • Photography and videotaping of any kind is strictly prohibited in restroom or locker room areas. Participants are not allowed to film within the facility without permission from the Campus Recreation Department.
                • All bags or other personal items should be stored in lockers or cubbies. Lockers for day-use are available in the locker rooms. The Campus Recreation Office, Office of Student Affairs and SUNY Cortland are not responsible for lost or stolen items. The Campus Recreation Office highly encourages all Authorized Users to bring pad/combo locks for day-use and personal lockers.

                Lost & Found Policy

                • Lost & Found is located at the Front Desk of the Student Life Center
                • Any unattended items will be collected and brought to the lost & found area.
                • Unclaimed items will be handled consistent with State law. Items of greater value will be brought to the University Police Department.

                Authorized Minor Policy

                • Campus Recreation takes seriously its obligations under the University’s Child Protection Policy. Any Authorized Minor under the age of eighteen (18) must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times in the Facility, with the exception of single occupancy restrooms or single stall toilets. Under no circumstances should an Authorized Minor ever be unaccompanied without a parent or guardian in the swimming pool or locker room areas (again, with the exception of single occupancy restrooms or single stall toilets).
                • All fitness equipment should be used consistent with posted Campus Recreation or manufacturer’s guidance on proper use, including with regard to age, fitness, and proper usage technique. Parents and guardians are responsible for ensuring that Authorized Minors follow such guidance.
                • All Authorized Users under the age of eleven (11) are strictly prohibited from utilizing cardiovascular fitness machines and weight training equipment and must follow all posted restrictions. If a higher minimum age is posted for a particular piece of equipment or equipment category, that minimum age should be followed.

                Removal Policy

                • Campus Recreation reserves the right to eject anyone whose behavior or activity is unruly or illegal in nature. Membership privileges will be revoked without a refund and the individual(s) will be escorted from the facility. The University Police Department may be contacted.
                • Users may be responsible for damage or repair costs associated with reckless or negligent use of equipment and/or facilities.
