The Mary Joy Green Sherlach '78 Scholarship was established by her husband, Bill ’80, and their children Katy and Maura. Mary Joy’s family created this endowment in her memory as she made the ultimate sacrifice in the tragedy of Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012.Mary was a practicing school psychologist and her actions exemplified courage, compassion and dedication for her students. The scholarship will provide deserving SUNY Cortland students the support to attend graduate school in school psychology as a priority and social work as a secondary preference. Awards will be made annually to a graduating senior who has majored in Psychology at SUNY Cortland with satisfactory academic achievement.

Application materials due April 15, 2025. Submit application thorough Academic Works

Scholarship Criteria:

•Awarded to a matriculated senior level student in good academic standing at SUNY Cortland

•Is currently majoring in psychology

•Recipient(s) must plan to attend graduate school in a school psychology degree program as first priority. If no applicants exist, then students enrolled in a social work degree program will be the secondary consideration.

•Recipient(s) must submit a personal statement indicating their intent to attend graduate school. The essay will be approximately 500 words.

•Recipient(s) must demonstrate proof of graduate school enrollment and submit it to the Cortland College Foundation.

•Recipient(s) must have a satisfactory academic achievement.

•Payment will be made directly to the graduate school of which the student is enrolled.

•The scholarship is a one-time award.
