Annual Spring Fling Carnival Planned

04/23/2018

With finals week looming, what better way for SUNY Cortland students to relax than with a fun-filled day of carnival games and live music?

The annual Spring Fling carnival and concert will take place on Saturday, April 28.

Organized by the Student Activities Board (SAB) and supported by the Student Government Association (SGA), the carnival will feature inflatables, an obstacle course, a mechanical bull, a human foosball game, caricature artists and a barbeque provided by Auxiliary Services Corporation (ASC). Times of the event in front of Moffett Center and Old Main have been changed from 1 to 5 p.m.

“I did have a lot of help from my executive board, which I’m very grateful for,” said Jessica Sixt, who chairs the SAB Spring Fling carnival committee.

“Everything came together smoothly, and I’m very happy with how it turned out,” said Sixt, an inclusive education major from Franklin Square, N.Y.

Cassadee Pope, The Voice Season 3 Winner, will perform at 3 p.m. in Old Main Brown Auditorium. The concert and carnival are free and open to the campus community.

The scheduled concert performer Mike Posner cancelled. SAB soon will announce a replacement concert performer with details on ticket purchases.

The performer is chosen from a survey conducted following winter break that listed students’ top five choices for performers they would like to see this year, according to SAB Music chair, Sonia Devora Vallejo.

“We have a lot of kids who complain about not getting who they want,” said Vallejo, a dual major in anthropology and psychology from the Bronx, N.Y. “But some kids don’t fill out the survey, so most important part is getting them to fill out survey.”

The SAB music committee considers those student picks along with artist availability and whether or not bringing in a particular performer falls within SAB’s budget.

“Because the event was so close to Coachella, a lot of artists didn’t want to make the trip to Cortland, but I think it’s going to be different, and I think people will enjoy coming,” said Vallejo.
