SUNY Cortland seeking teams for Esports tournament

04/21/2020

If you’ve got a talent for video gaming and want to represent SUNY Cortland in a SUNY-wide competition for up to $20,000 in prize money, you’re in luck.

The SUNY Esports Chancellor Challenge powered by Extreme Networks is open to SUNY Cortland students in good academic standing. Students may register online through Recreational Sports.

Registrations must be completed by 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 23. Since there are a very limited number of participants, a live random drawing will take place that evening on the CortlandRecSports Instagram Live account at 7 p.m. to determine which teams will represent SUNY Cortland.

The tournament allows students the opportunity to participate in one or more of the following three games: Fortnite (Duos), Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Rocket League (3v3). It will begin on Monday, April 27 and last for two to three weeks, depending on system-wide registration.

A full rulebook is available online.

SUNY Chancellor Kristina Johnson and sponsor Extreme Networks have committed $10,000 each to a pool of prize money. The winning schools will have the prize donated to their campus’ Student Emergency Fund.

Matt Nuesell, assistant director of Recreational Sports, Intramural Sports and Sport Clubs, is organizing SUNY Cortland’s participation in the tournament.

“The SUNY Esports Chancellor Challenge is an exciting opportunity for SUNY Cortland students to compete statewide from the safety of their own homes,” Nuesell said.

“For those individuals who are looking for something to do during these difficult times, this event offers a welcome distraction, an opportunity to compete, and a chance to represent SUNY Cortland. The fact that it’s free to participate in and there is $20,000 in prize money available to support the Student Emergency fund only enhances the competition and makes it a lot more intriguing.

“I’d encourage all students who are interested in participating to submit an entry form quickly, as there is an aggressive timeline for registration.”
