Campus Invited to Take ‘It’s On Us’ Pledge

11/09/2015

When it comes to sexual assault prevention, it’s on everyone to take a stand.

That’s the message of the national “It’s On Us” effort, a message that encourages bystanders to intervene before non-consensual sex occurs and one that SUNY Cortland will look to spread during the week leading up to the College’s annual Cortaca Jug football game.

Volunteers will collect pledges from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, to Thursday, Nov. 12, in three different campus locations: the Neubig Hall lobby on Tuesday, the Corey Union lobby on Wednesday and the Student Life Center lobby on Thursday. Last spring, more than 400 SUNY Cortland students signed an online petition to support the campaign.

Nationwide, studies suggest that one out of every five women is sexually assaulted during college. At SUNY Cortland, most reported sexual assaults involve alcohol use and people who previously knew each other.

The College’s three-day awareness event coincides with the national “It’s On Us” week of action. It also continues a yearlong effort to educate students about sexual abuse and to create a campus culture based on mutual respect and communication.
