In Cortland the college and community are teaming up to host a day of community service honoring Martin Luther King, Jr., on Monday, Jan. 17.

The day will feature a variety of public-spirited activities primarily organized by SUNY Cortland’s Institute for Civic Engagement, SUNY Cortland AmeriCorps, the Cortland YWCA and partner agencies.

Participants are offered the following volunteer service opportunities:

• Supervise and play with young people from 8 a.m.-noon at the Lime Hollow Center for Environment and Culture, located at 338 McLean Road.

• Supervise and play with young people at the YMCA’s Active Kids Program from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. at 22 Tompkins St.

• Help set up for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Luncheon from 11 a.m.-noon at YWCA, 14 Clayton Ave.

• Help with post-luncheon cleanup, from 1-1:30 p.m. at the YWCA.

Community Participation Encouraged

• Enjoy a free soup and bread luncheon from 11:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. at the YWCA of Cortland, 14 Clayton Ave.

• Hear Samuel Kelley, a SUNY Cortland Distinguished Service Professor, speak on Dr. King from 12:20-1 p.m. at the YWCA of Cortland. A question-and-answer period will follow.

• Join a lesson in creating friendship bracelets at 1 p.m. at Cortland Free Library, 32 Church St. Materials for craft making will be available from noon-8 p.m.

• Participate in a community conversation on social justice that focuses on experiences with prejudice of all kinds as well as resources to address prejudice, 2 p.m. at Main Street SUNY Cortland, 9 Main St.

Other event organizers include: the Cortland Downtown Partnership, Cortland Free Library, Lime Hollow Center for Environment and Culture and YMCA of Cortland.
