Expert to Address Impact of Business and Technology on Education March 19

Dameon V. Alexander, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Cambridge in England, will discuss "The Imprint of Business and Technology on Urban Education" on Thursday, March 19, at SUNY Cortland.

The talk, which begins at 7 p.m. in the Corey Union Fireplace Lounge, is free and open to the public.

Alexander, of Washington, D.C., has focused his scholarship on social issues concerning U.S. education in the age of globalization. A key panelist for the 2003 U.S. Congressional Forum, ‘Save Our Students and Schools,' in Washington, D.C., that same year he delivered the keynote speech on "Seek Advanced and Higher Education" for Withrow University.

He is currently researching his thesis on "Sociology of Education, Organization Culture, Knowledge Production" at Cambridge, where in 2006 he earned a Masters of Philosophy (MPhil) in Education Research and Social Science Research. Since 2006, he has served at Cambridge as an independent education consultant and academic advisor.

Since 2007, Alexander has been employed by The George Washington University as consultant, managing director strategic operations and chief information officer for academic technology. Among other duties, he reviews, edits and writes internal proposals on emerging technologies.

From 2001-05, he was program administrator in student support services for Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. Among other responsibilities, he taught, designed, implemented, analyzed, and evaluated educational programs and curricula for undergraduates. He also was coordinator for multicultural recruitment and human resources liaison, and worked to help the university increase freshman minority enrollment by 93 percent in one year and 10 percent each year after. While working at Xavier University, he earned a Masters of Education in Administration and Supervision. He also received a Bachelor of Arts in Business and Communications there in 1999.

Alexander served as an adjunct lecturer on issues in human diversity at Cincinnati State Community College from 2003-05

Alexander is a member of the British Sociological Association, British Society of Education Consultants, National Association for College Admission Counselors and regional associations for college admission counselors in California, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and Texas. He served as an interim board of directors member for Greater Cincinnati Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

The presentation is sponsored by the Campus Artist and Lecture Series and the Cortland's Urban Recruitment of Educators scholarship program, which aims to help New York state meet its critical need for outstanding teachers who understand the effects of culture, ethnicity, gender, language, poverty and race on students who attend high-need urban schools.
