Dear campus community,
Today marks the beginning of Latine History Month, which is also known as National Hispanic Heritage Month.
Sept. 15 is a significant date for many Latin Americans, as it is the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile celebrate independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively.
Through Oct. 15, the university will celebrate the achievements, impact and the importance of Latine people on our culture and in our society. A full list of events is available online. These events include many social gatherings and occasions as well as lectures and talks on critical topics.
I encourage you to look at the list and attend if you are able. These are wonderful opportunities to connect and engage with students, faculty and staff across campus.
I would like to thank event organizers AnnaMaria Cirrincione Omilanowicz, director of the Multicultural Life and Diversity Office, and Associate Professor Bekeh Ukelina, acting coordinator of Latinx and Latin American Studies, as well as the many student groups and faculty, staff and guest speakers who will truly make this a special month of reflection on our campus.
