Heather Ramsdale: Artist's Workshop, Untitled installation, paper, cardboard
Heather Ramsdale: Artist's Workshop
September 20 - October 20, 2018
On September 20, 2018, the artist instructed students how to build a low-cost/high-impact, site-specific installation. In a span of several hours, the installation was constructed from a simple cardboard box substrate and black sheet paper.
Ramsdale built on an experience she gained during her recent art residency at Joya: arte + ecología in southern Spain. The conditions of the program dictated the course of her creative process. The lack of materials and tools pushed her to expand the scope of her studio practice by exploring the possibilities and limitations of paper. She explains. “The body of work I made during this time was comprised of large-scale, installation-based objects that have the illusion of weight and permanence as the sculptures were made from paper. As an object maker, both large and small, this exploration of temporal work was different from previous studio projects. The alpine desert mountains of Almería offered the vast wide-open landscape critical for this type of investigation and certainly had an impact on the way I controlled the outcome of the structure.”
