TeaYoun Kim-Kassor: Shibori-zome

A series of framed samples are produced by the Shibori-zome technique. The fabric dyeing process is a traditional Japanese textile finishing technique that has been used in Japan for over 400 years. It involves refining fabrics through incredibly intricate handcraft. The displayed samples are the learning outcomes acquired directly from the 4th generation of Japanese master artisan, Hiroshi Murase, in Arimatsu, Nagoya, Japan.
The result of this labor-intensive exercise illustrates a formal aesthetic quality of the traditional fiber processes. Void of concept, these pieces contrast with conceptually supported works presented in the main gallery but lay a path toward ideas of cultural identity and personal narrative, the focal point of the exhibition.
