Campus Champion

Amanda Wasson, University Police Department’s first female investigator, helps ensure that students stay on track with their academics while dealing with the burden of reporting a crime. She is trained in the interview process of making students feel at ease in order to tell their story, educating them on their rights and how they might proceed. But it’s her ongoing contact with students that can prevent these incidences from taking over their lives. After seven years at SUNY Cortland, she has a great track record seeing these students through to graduation. This month she’s wearing a pink badge pin for Breast Cancer Awareness Month – a cause especially important since her mom’s diagnosis and recovery.

SUNY Cortland celebrated its 150th birthday in style on Oct. 5. Student dance groups performed, the Rock ’N Blues Ensemble played some classic tunes and the cast of “Annie Get Your Gun” led the crowd in singing “Happy Birthday.” A video presentation followed remarks from H. Carl McCall, chairman of SUNY’s board of trustees, and Barbara Lifton, state assemblywoman. The night capped off with 1,000 slices of cake and a fireworks display. A photo gallery of images from the Sesquicentennial celebration is available online.
