Jean LeLoup and Robert Ponterio
Jean LeLoup, professor emerita of international communications and culture and United States Air Force Academy, and Robert Ponterio, International Communications and Culture Department, presented a workshop titled, “Lessons in Cultural Perspective: How Can We Get There from Here?” and a session titled “French Video Online: Accessing Authentic Language and Culture” at the annual conference of the Ohio Foreign Language Association held April 8-10 in Columbus, Ohio.
Timothy J. Baroni
Timothy J. Baroni, Biological Sciences Department, recently had two papers published from work he participated in with a team analyzing macrofungal biodiversity in Guyana, South America. “The Entolomataceae of the Pakaraima Mountains of Guyana III: New Species of Rhodocybe,” was published in the Dec. 26, 2009, issue of Mycoscience. “The Entolomataceae of the Pakaraima Mountains of Guyana IV: New Species of Calliderma, Paraeccilia and Trichopilus,” appeared in the Dec. 21, 2009, issue of MYCOLOGIA. Both articles were written by team members by T.W. Henkel, M. C. Aime, D. L. Largent and T. J. Baroni. The team was funded by grants awarded to Henkel by the National Science Foundation and the National Geographic Society. Henkel is from Humboldt State University in Northern California, Baroni's alma mater for his B.A. and M.A. degrees.
A third paper, published in late 2009 in Synopsis Fungorum Fungiflora, was written by L. Ryvarden, Aime and Baroni. “Studies in Neotropical Polypores 26. A New Species of Trametes and Revisitation of an Old,” is the result of National Geographic Funding to Baroni in 2007 to study fungal diversity of the Maya Mountains in Belize.
Ute Ritz-Deutch
Ute Ritz-Deutch, History Department, was a commentator at the annual conference of the German Studies Association held Oct. 8 in Oakland, Calif. She commented on the panel “Wishful Brothers: The Invention of Native Americans in German Literature, Media, and Performance.”
Jenn McNamara
Jenn McNamara, Art and Art History Department, won Best in Show at the Foundry Art Centre’s exhibit “Fiber: Twenty Ten.” She was awarded a solo show that will take place next spring at the Foundry Art Centre, St. Charles, Mo.
Gretchen Herrmann
Gretchen Herrmann, Library, presented her paper “From Our House to Your House: Economic Utility of the U.S. Garage Sale in the ‘Great Recession’” at the Society for Applied Anthropology annual meeting held March 24-27 in Merida, Mexico. The paper treats the renewed utilization of garage sale shopping and selling to stretch tight budgets, and, for movers and those foreclosed upon, to quickly liquidate belongings for needed ready cash during the current economic downturn.
Luis Columna and Marley Barduhn
Luis Columna, Physical Education Department, and Marley Barduhn, Academic Affairs Office, co-presented a paper on “Integrating Physical Activity into the Lives of Migrant Workers’ Children and Families” at the National Migrant Education Conference held April 11-14 in Anaheim, Calif.
Robert Darling
Robert Darling, Geology Department, co-presented a paper with a former student John-Luke Henriquez ’09, at the Northeast/Southeast Regional Meeting of the Geological Society of America held in March in Baltimore, Md. The title of the paper is “Zircon-clinging, Inferred Analectic Melt Inclusions in Adirondack Garnet.” Henriquez is currently a graduate student at the University of Maryland.
Alexander G. Gonzalez
Alexander G. Gonzalez, English, has been informed that his article, “Annotations for Brendan Behan’s The Quare Fellow,” has been accepted for publication in ANQ: A Quarterly Journal of Short Articles, Notes, and Reviews.
Arden Zipp
Arden Zipp, chemistry, chaired the annual meeting of the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO) Subcommittee meeting that was recently held at the headquarters of the American Chemical Society in Washington, D.C. Zipp has chaired the USNCO Task Force for several years and has recently added the Subcommittee Chairmanship to his duties. The Task Force writes and grades the annual exams used to select 20 students to attend a two-week study camp where a four-person team is identiied to compete in the International Chemistry Olympiad.
Dawn Van Hall
Dawn Van Hall, library, attended the University Photographers Association of America's annual symposium in June at Jamestown Community College in Jamestown, N.Y. She was honored at this event by being inducted as a fellow of the University Photographers' Association of America for distinguished ability and service to the association and contributions to the advancement of photography. Van Hall, vice president of University Photographers Association of America, is on the board of directors of this national organization and chairs the Publications Committee.
