President urges students to have a safe Halloween

10/30/2020

Dear Cortland students:

Halloween normally brings fun and festive celebrations to campus.

While I hope you are able to enjoy the holiday this weekend, I do urge you to do so safely, both for your classmates and the Cortland community at large. Halloween comes at a very important juncture in the semester while we are effectively slowing the spread of COVID-19.

You will have opportunities to stay engaged and enjoy the season. For example:

  • The Black Student Union will lead an online conversation about Halloween traditions and movies until 5 p.m. today. For access information, check today’s “In the Loop” email from the Student Government Association.

  • Campus Activities is hosting a virtual “Psychic Fair” from 7 to 10 p.m. on Saturday. You may register through the link sent to your email earlier this week.

  • Faculty and staff will be handing out Halloween treats throughout the day on Saturday.

  • Other ideas on how to stay safe this weekend are posted online.

I encourage you to be creative and use the technology at your disposal to get together with friends, watch scary movies and compare costumes. Please remember to practice physical distancing and wear a face covering if you are around someone from outside your residence.

I know this Halloween will be very different for you, but your continued commitment this weekend will help SUNY Cortland move forward.

I sincerely thank you for the sacrifices you have made and continue to make during this semester. Please be smart and be safe.

All the best,

Erik J. Bitterbaum

President
